Angina

Overview

Angina (Angina Pectoris) is a pain in the centre of the chest caused by the heart muscles not receiving enough oxygen. This is due to a narrowing of the blood vessels which supply these muscles, usually caused by aging, but accelerated by smoking, cholesterol, obesity and diabetes.

Causes

Most commonly, a coronary artery disease or a spasm of the coronary arteries can cause angina. These conditions may be a result of smoking, excessive alcohol, use or abuse of cocaine, high blood pressure or diabetes. They could cause a reduction of oxygenated blood supply to the heart, leading to angina. Angina might also occur when the person is under severe emotional stress.

Symptoms

Pain and discomfort are the main symptoms of angina. Angina may be felt as pressure, heaviness, squeezing or tightness in the chest. The pain may radiate to the neck, arms or back.  Sometimes, a person may also suffer from indigestion or heartburn.  Other symptoms include cramping, fatigue, weakness, sweating and shortness of breath.

Diagnosis

The doctor will do a careful physical examination of the patient and take note of the symptoms to make a proper diagnosis. The doctor will also note down the risk factors if any and the family history of the patient. The doctor can also order some tests and procedures that the patient will have to undergo to do a systematic evaluation of the condition of the patient.

Treatment

Various alternative and complementary therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
