Leg Cramps

Overview

The involuntary and forceful contractions of the leg muscles is termed as leg cramps. In most cases, the muscles of the calf, hamstrings and the cross muscles across the hip and knee contract. The cramp lasts for a few seconds to several minutes.

Causes

There are many causes for muscle or leg cramps. People over 50 may experience this more often in the night. Side effects of certain medicines might sometimes cause leg cramps. Pregnancy, thyroid or hormone disorders, nerve abnormalities, diabetes and anaemia could also contribute to this discomfort.  Mineral deficiencies, especially calcium can also be a cause.  Dehydration can be a risk factor as muscles generally need water to function properly and loss of water or insufficient intake of water daily can cause cramps. Being overweight, a diminished blood supply, electrolyte or fluid imbalances, leg injury, muscle weakness and unusual rigorous exercises may be other probable causes of leg cramps.

Symptoms

There are no prolonged contractions or previous indications that cramps may occur.  A person could suddenly wake up in the night with a pain at the back of his leg for no apparent reason.  It could be a severe pain which can last for seconds or even minutes.  It settles down by itself and the pain disappears like nothing had occurred but it causes a lot of pain and discomfort as long as it lasts. Muscle tenderness, restricted leg movement with occasional soreness and swelling may be associated symptoms.

Diagnosis

Firstly the doctor will take down the medical history of the patient and note the symptoms. If the person experiences leg cramps very frequently, then the doctor might prescribe further tests to rule out any other serious underlying disorders.

Treatment

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
