Tinnitus

Overview

Tinnitus is a perception of sounds such as ringing, whishing, booming noises originating within the ear or head. It may be a symptom of an ear infection but can also be caused by injury or age related hearing loss, circulatory problems and foreign objects in the ear.

Causes

Tinnitus can arise in any section of the hearing system be it the outer, middle or inner ear. It can also be caused by abnormalities in the brain. Presence of ear wax or a foreign body in the external ear blocks the general background sounds making the patient more aware of their own head noise. Tinnitus may be caused when there is damage to the nerves in the inner ear. Ageing coupled with hearing loss and loud noise exposure is a common cause for tinnitus. Certain medication, existence of fluid or ear infections may also cause tinnitus.

Symptoms

Tinnitus is a problem where only the person who is suffering with this condition hears the head sounds. It is universally well known as ‘ringing in the ears’. In addition to this, the person may experience dizziness, hearing loss, ear pain or a sense of fullness in the ears. Tinnitus sounds may be heard by a person who has nasal complications, high stress levels and nausea.  The head noise can be of different frequencies for different people. The people who are affected with tinnitus may also suffer with anxiety as a result of the symptoms.

Diagnosis

A doctor will take a thorough medical history of the person suffering from tinnitus. In addition to this, the doctor will do a systematic physical examination to assess any loss of hearing and to determine if there are any deficiencies. Formal hearing tests may also be needed for an in depth evaluation in determining the extent of hearing loss and the source of the problem.

Treatment

Various alternative and complementary therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.

In some cases, specialised surgical treatment may also be suggestedby a doctor.
