Fears & Phobias

Fear is an emotional response to a perceived threat. A phobia is an intense and persistent fear. Common fears include flying, spiders and heights. Fears can develop as a response to a previous situation eg a painful extraction at the dentists on one visit could result in fear being felt in subsequent visits. Fears can also be picked up from others eg if a parent takes a child to the dentist, as is themselves fearful of dentists, then the child may also feel fear.

The degree of fear may vary from a mild caution to a debilitating terror. Phobias are characterised by an excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared situation. Fear can reach a stage where it is beyond one’s control and is interfering with daily life. An example would be a sufferer from agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) who can no longer leave their house. Physical symptoms of fear can include palpitations, diarrhoea or insomnia.

If the cause of the fear is known then the Bach Flower Essence Mimulus can help. Where the cause of the fear is unknown, then Aspen is indicated. Where the fear has reached a heightened level, then Rock Rose (the Bach Flower Remedy for terror) can be used. Phobias can also be treated using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, hypnotherapy or Emotional Freedom Technique.
