Homeopathy

Introduction

Homeopathy is an effective system of healing which assists the body’s natural tendency to heal itself. Homeopathy is based on the principal that a disruption of one’s vital force or energy system, can lead to physical and emotional problems.

History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy is founded on the writings and teachings of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). A qualified Doctor, Hahnemann became disillusioned with medical practices which led him to begin his first homeopathic experiments in 1790, after translating William Cullen’s Materia Medica into German. Hahnemann believed there was a better way of providing healthcare and looked into the “laws of similars”. At the time, a species of South American tree-bark (cinchona) was being used to treat malaria. Hahnemann ingested the bark and discovered that it caused symptoms similar to malaria. To increase the healing potential of the medicines Hahnemann discovered, he prepared them by diluting the substance and then shaking it vigorously with force, which is known as succussion. This process was repeated to prepare remedies in various potencies which made the medicines more effective and reduced the likelihood of unwanted reactions.

How does it work?

Homeopathy works on the principal of “like cures like”.  Another example is with the use of coffee in minute doses for insomnia. In large quantities, coffee can cause sleeplessness in healthy individuals. Coffee in homeopathic dilution can help an individual to sleep naturally. Homeopathy is a holistic therapy which means it is patient centred and will take into consideration all of an individuals symptoms and how they personally experience them. An individual’s history, emotional and physical characteristics are also taken into account.

A typical appointment

You will usually spend about an hour to an hour and a half for a first consultation where the homeopath will ask questions to find out about your symptoms and how you experience them. Other information which will be sought can include dietary habits, food and temperature preferences, current lifestyle, sleep patterns, how you deal with stress, past medical history and family medical history. This allows the homeopath to build up a complete picture of you and determine the best homeopathic treatment tailored to your needs.

Follow-up appointments usually last about 30-40 minutes and are recommended to assess the reaction to the prescription, the progress of the patient and to determine if the prescription needs to be altered in any way.

All consultations are confidential between the homeopath and client.

What to expect

Each person responds differently, some experience significant improvement in their symptoms within a few weeks; with others it could be more gradual. In some occasions, their may be a slight worsening of some symptoms which may last a few days, followed by a gradual improvement.

Homeopathy is used to treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions from acute fevers, colds and tooth ache, to chronic conditions such as arthritis, skin conditions, allergies, chronic fatigue, depression, digestive problems, anxiety, stress, insomnia, menstrual problems, fibroids, PMS, thyroid disorders, recurring colds and many others.
