An exercise system, Pilates was developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, a physical trainer. The system focuses on building the core strength without adding bulky muscle. It prevents injury, increases stamina, and improves agility and flexibility. Pilates utilises complex and simple methods of engaging the body and mind and was originally utilised by dancers, athletes and trainers but is now a form of core strength building fitness regime. The basic focus is on proper breathing, increasing flexibility and stamina with additional toned body looks.
