Knowledge is Power Against COVID-19

Yesterday on This Morning, TV doctor Dr Chris revealed his simple three step plan to help boost your immune system amid the COVID-19 crisis. His advice is based on increasing the gut’s friendly bacteria count since 70% of the body’s immune system is in the gut. The steps include eating yoghurt, then increase the population of the friendly bacteria by feeding them with probiotic rich foods such as beans and bananas. His third step is to take vitamin D which many people in the UK are deficient in and which plays a key role in boosting the immune system.

This is great information to share as it arms the public with knowledge on what they can do to potentially reduce the likelihood of contracting the virus, or potentially reducing the severity of symptoms and duration if it is contracted. There is no secret in the relationship between gut health and the immune response, and there is plenty of scientific evidence to back these claims.

It made me wonder why the Government is not communicating this information during a pandemic which affects immune compromised people the most. I’m not belittling the complexity of the subject, but at the same time, knowledge is power so shouldn’t we be sharing this knowledge more so people can help themselves as much as possible through diet, nutrition and supplementation?

Dr Chris is a well-known and respected medical figure, so it is no surprise that many local and national papers picked up on this story and have been sharing his advice today which is amazing! With all the advice on social distancing and washing of hands, we need to be shouting from the rooftops about all the other things that are available to us. We are being told that we will not return to “normal” for a long time. When lockdown ends there may still be anxiety about potentially contracting COVID-19, perhaps more so because people won’t be protected by their four walls so venturing out in the unknown can create additional fear.

Yes, it makes sense to not touch surfaces and then touch your face and it makes sense to regularly wash your hands, but does it also not make sense to boost your immune system as a potential preventative measure?

One thing to note is that this advice is not going to be a “one size fits all” type of thing as we are all unique and complex beings and those with pre-existing health conditions may require a different treatment plan.

Natural health practitioners will always treat a person holistically and advise based on their unique needs. For example, a practitioner may not recommend probiotics in the first instance if someone already has an imbalance of gut bacteria and symptoms show that the bad bacteria exceed the good, as this could worsen symptoms and not help in boosting the immune system at all. The point here is, always seek professional help if you are unsure how best to boost your immune system and support your health.
